West End news for July 14, 2021

Meeting tonight

The West End Park & Open Space Commission is slated to meet at 6:30 p.m. today at the Chestnuthill Park Building on Route 715 in Brodheadsville.

Auxiliary meets

The American Legion Auxiliary is slated to meet at 7 p.m. today at the American Legion Post home in Gilbert.

Polk meeting

The Polk Township Supervisors are slated to meet 8 a.m. Thursday for a general meeting.

AA meetings held

As a service to community, McMichaels UMC hosts Alcoholics Anonymous meetings every Wednesday at noon and every Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Church campfire

McMichaels UMC hosts an outdoor Bible study which will be held around a campfire and will include hot dogs every Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

League meeting

The West End Little League is scheduled to meet at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnuthill Park Building in Brodheadsville.

Post cleanup

It’s monthly cleanup time at the American Legion Post 927 on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.

All members are asked to just show up and lend a hand. No tools are required. They will be provided.

Youth car wash

The Queen of Peace Youth Car Wash will be happening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at West End Physical Therapy in Kresgeville.

Singing is back

Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville is singing in again. That is just one happy change in light of the easing of restrictions due to the easing of the COVID-19 situation.

Another change is face mask requirements have been lifted for those who are fully vaccinated, however, those who wish to continue wearing them are welcome to do so.

And as per CDC guidelines: If you are not fully vaccinated and age 2 or older, you should wear a mask in indoor places.

Hand sanitizer will be available in the entryway and in the aisle beside the first pew for worshippers’ convenience.

Girlfriends meet

The Girlfriends Group at Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday on the church’s lower level for a rise and shine breakfast and Bible study.

Spaces are limited, so sign up at the connect center.

Parish Feast Day

This Sunday, the Parish Feast Day at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, and Father Mike’s new assignment will be celebrated at the Gilbert church.

The transition celebration will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a rosary in the church.

The statue of Mary will be adorned with her veil awaiting prayer intentions. Fabric strips will be available on tables by the statue where one can write one’s prayer intention and attach the intention to the veil.

During the opening hymn of the 11 a.m. Mass, the statue of Mary will process into the church and reside in a special prayer space during this period of transition.

After the 11 a.m. Mass, members will celebrate the parish as they send Father Mike to his new assignment with a luncheon at the St. Joseph the Worker Pavilion.

Sunday funday

It’s Funday Sunday at Effort UMC with the theme Three Slices.

Those slices are pizza, cake and a slice of the Bible.

The event is open to all children from ages 4 years and up. Event will be held outside, weather permitting. Otherwise everyone is to meet in Wesley Hall.

Family Rosary

The Sunday Family Rosary at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is scheduled for 8 p.m.

All are invited to join for the Rosary and bring a chair and/or blanket.

Women’s Club

The Western Pocono Women’s Club is set to meet Monday at 7 p.m. at Effort UMC.

Linda Raudabaugh, volunteer manager of Meals on Wheels, will be the guest speaker. Clients of Meals on Wheels continue to receive the group’s handmade lap quilts on their birthdays. As of July, the quilting committee completed and donated an additional 32 quilts.

The club will be celebrating 50 years as a Federated Women’s Club on Oct. 2. The Anniversary Committee is planning a special event in celebration of our outstanding service to our community through the years.

Refreshment will be provided by Darlene Beers, Karen Bongarzone, Shirley Correll and Gail Schellman.

Current officers are Fern Smith, president; Vicki Connor, vice president; Mary Minnucci, treasurer; and Darlene Beers, secretary.

Monday bingo

Once again the American Legion in Gilbert will host Monday Nite Bingo. It is an open-to-community event and begins at 6:30 p.m.

Valor meets

Tuesday at 7 p.m. Valor PTSD will meet at American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert.

Polk volunteers

Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company volunteers had a busy June, reports Chief Billy Tippett.

The volunteers of the fire company were dispatched and responded to 22 emergencies and also completed 194 hours of training and participated in 300 hours of fundraising.

They provide that help in an emergency 24 hours per day, seven days per week and every day of the year from two stations, Kresgeville and Jonas, with six apparatus and attend weekly training on Monday nights.

QOP blood drive

A community American Red Cross blood drive is being held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in the Parish Hall in Gilbert from 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

To help maintain social distancing, scheduled appointments are strongly recommended.

Participants are reminded to wear a mask and bring photo ID to the blood drive appointment.

Free meals

PVEN kids’ summer meals program is on at the Western Pocono Community Library every Monday, Wednesday and Friday through Aug. 20 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

This program is open to all children under 18 (or if developmentally disabled, under 21). No registration or proof of residency required.

Meals are prepackaged in Grab-n-Go bags with meals for two days: two breakfasts and two lunches.

Special event set

The Chestnuthill Senior Center located at the Zion Lutheran Church Social Hall on Route 209 in Brodheadsville is the host site for a presentation for A Swallow Study through East Stroudsburg University about dysphagia (swallowing disorders) by the Dysphagia Warriors to be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. July 21.

Community dinner

Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville is having a free community dinner on July 21. At this time it is still scheduled as a drive-thru pickup meal from 5 to 6 p.m.

Registration open

Registration is now open for the Monroe County Youth Field Day on Sept. 11 at Camp Trexler Scout reservation.

Reservations are to be done online at MCYFD.org.

Sweet competition

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is holding its annual photo competition.

Send in a photo that showcases Monroe County’s finest natural resources to enter.

Winners will receive fresh maple syrup from the Meesing Sugarbush and a 2022 MCCD calendar. Submissions are due Sept. 24, 2021.

One grand prize winner will also be featured on the cover of the 2022 calendar.
