Woman sentenced after lively exchange

A Carbon County judge sentenced a Lansford woman to a year on probation and 50 hours of community service following a lively exchange before Judge Joseph J. Matika on Thursday.

Sherry Ann Phillips, 39, pleaded guilty to fleeing a police officer.Borough police officer Richard Reis arrived at Phillips' home on April 13 to arrest her on a bench warrant for failing to show up for a hearing. When she pulled up to the house, she ran inside and locked the door, refusing to open it. Reis ended up forcing the door open."I went into the house to get my tennis shoes because I knew I was going to jail," she told Matika. She said she was wearing flip-flops at the time."You've been involved in the system pretty heavily since 2012," Matika observed."Once a year," Phillips said. "Maybe twice."She admitted to having "hot urine," meaning that she failed a urine test for drugs.Matika suggested drug abuse may be the root of her legal troubles."You steal to support your habit," he said."No I don't," Phillips shot back. Her lawyer, Matthew J. Mottola, asked Matika to impose probation rather than more jail time. He described Phillips as a "good mother," but told the judge she couldn't be a good mother if she was in jail.Matika sentenced her to one year on probation, 50 hours of community service, a drug and alcohol evaluation, and random urine screenings, with zero tolerance for infractions.Because Phillips' probation on the original charge has been revoked because of the new charge, she'll be in Carbon County Correctional Facility until October.
