Lansford man admits to assault charges

A Lansford man admitted in Carbon County court to two counts of simple assault for two incidents that occurred a day apart in the borough.

Joseph B. Hollan Jr., 45, entered his pleas before Judge Steven R. Serfass for incidents on Dec. 11 and 12, 2020.

Felony counts of robbery, burglary and aggravated assault were dropped in a plea deal with the district attorney’s office.

Borough police said on Dec. 11 Hollan entered a residence in the borough and went into a bedroom where he assaulted another male. Police said a set of brass knuckles were found but Hollan claimed he did not use them in the incident. On Dec. 12, Hollan assaulted the same victim on a street in the borough.

Hollan said the incident was due to a female he was dating. He claimed his actions were a “spur of the moment” incident. He also told the court, “I take full responsibility for my actions.”

Assistant District Attorney Brian Gazo noted that Hollan was involved in another assaultive situation, but admitted it was in 2004.

Serfass rejected a time-served sentence. Hollan has served 66 days in prison before posting bail.

Serfass sentenced him on both charges to serve three to one day less 24 months in prison, with the terms running concurrently. He was also ordered to get a mental health evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, attend and successfully complete an anger management course, render 100 hours of community service, supply a DNA sample, have no contact with the victim, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.

He was given credit for 66 days served and has 24 more days to serve and will begin serving them at 6 p.m. on July 16 on consecutive weekends.
