Palmerton road construction projects planned

The Palmerton Borough Council received an update Thursday evening on upcoming road construction, which will be done in two parts.

Part A involves curbing and stormwater upgrades. Borough manager Rodger Danielson said the water department is already taking care of a few repairs on the 400 block of Harvard Avenue ahead of the road paving project for Part B, which is the borough's 2016 Road Program.Luzerne County Site Contractors in Hazleton was awarded the project for Part A. Their bid was $143,250. The curbs around the borough park and at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Seventh Street will be upgraded to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. The work will expected to include making ramps and a dimpled surface to help visually impaired people know where the ramps are located. The stormwater upgrades will include new inlets and piping at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Seventh Street.Part B of the project will include paving, in most cases curb-to-curb, of the roads north of Delaware Avenue that run parallel to it, Danielson said at an April council meeting. This will include Franklin, Lafayette, Columbia and Harvard avenues beginning at First Street all the way to East Lane.Danielson said Thursday that the paving project is expected to begin July 5.Livengood Excavating Inc. in Walnutport had the lowest bid, which was just under $1.4 million, out of the six companies that bid on the paving project."It's a phenomenal price for paving for us," Danielson said at the council's meeting in May.Since the bid came in lower than expected, he suggested that the project be expanded to include portions of the West End and spotted areas south of Delaware Avenue that haven't been paved recently."It's going to be a very busy time in Palmerton this summer," he said. The decision to increase the project hasn't been announced yet.
