Tamaqua talking with its teachers

By LISA PRICE

lprice@tnonline.comThe current four-year-pact between the Tamaqua's Teachers Education Association and the district expired July 30.During a committee meeting Tuesday night, Tamaqua school board members discussed the status of the negotiations."There's been a proposal from the board, presented to the teachers, and a proposal from the teachers presented to the board," said President Larry Wittig. "Talks are underway, and we hope to come to an agreement."Contacted Wednesday, Wittig declined to discuss the specifics of either proposal. In other discussions, the education committee will recommend that the board enter into a partnership with Schuylkill Vision."The Vision partnership is new to the entire county," district Superintendent Carol Makuta said. "It is a program targeting high-school-aged drivers. The message is 'Arrive Alive! Don't Text and Drive,'" she said."They asked for our approval to make announcements regarding the risks of not being a focused driver at our athletic events, and they will also hang a banner with their message."The board will also recommend forming an agreement with Play On! Sports, which is a national high school sports media company."Their network will provide comprehensive coverage of all boys and girls varsity sports," Makuta said."This will provide live and on-demand coverage for interested people to access, and the cost is funded through advertisements."
