Flag Day ceremony

Post 927, Gilbert, will celebrate Flag Day with an official retirement of unusable U.S. flags at noon on Sunday. The event is open to the public and the invitation is extended to the public to come and have old flags given the honor they deserve with this ceremony.

Flag day closure

The Monroe County Area Agency on Aging will be closed Monday due to Flag Day.

Community bingo

The main hall of the American Legion building in Gilbert will be the site of a Monday Night Bingo that is open to the community.

Card sales begin at 6:30 p.m.; game call at 7 p.m. The event runs to 9 p.m.

SAL meeting

The Sons of the American Legion is set to meet at 7 p.m. Monday at Post 927 in Gilbert.

Chestnuthill Board

The Chestnuthill Board of Supervisors, scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the township municipal building on Route 715, will be meeting on Wednesday, June 16, instead.

Summer hours

This Tuesday, The Garden of Giving will begin summer hours of 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., from Tuesdays through Saturdays; closed on holidays.

Volunteers are always needed to help with mulching, weeding, lawn mowing, and the collecting and cleaning of the many dozens of eggs every week.

Needle group

Effort UMC’s Prayer Shawl ministry volunteers are plying their needles again on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the former Day Care Kitchen complying with current COVID-19 requirements.

Members remind readers that folks can knit or crochet at home.

Preschools begin

Registration is now open for the Blessed Beginnings Preschool at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church for the 2021 fall school year and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

There will be a 3-year and 4-5 year class. Contact Margaret LaFiura for information 610-681-6137, ext. 114.

Effort UMC’s preschool is accepting registrations for the 2021-2022 school year for those children that are ages 3 through 5. The Just 3’s class will meet on Wednesday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and the Pre-K class will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 9 to 11 a.m.

Walking opportunity

The Western Pocono Community Library walking track in Brodheadsville is open again with new hours as of June 1.

There are morning, afternoon and even evening sessions Monday through Saturday.

Work opportunity

The Western Pocono Community Library is now taking applications for a housekeeping position. Applications can be picked up at the library from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Effort UMC is seeking a replacement for the current sexton, who is moving out of the area.

Tails & Tales begins

The Western Pocono Community Library’s Tails & Tales begins on Zoom the week of June 14. Grab & Go bags will be available each week as long as supplies last. For more information check the library’s website, call 570-992-7934, or walk in to check it out any day during the week except Sunday, when the library is closed, or during daily cleaning hours, from noon to 1 p.m. every day and again from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday.

Valor PTSD meeting

The Veterans unStoppable Peer to Peer Support Group will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday. It is open to non-Post members and is sponsored by Valor Paul’s House in Jonas.

Eldred Supervisors

The Board of Supervisors for Eldred Township is slated to meet at 7 p.m. June 16, at the municipal building in Kunkletown.

Men’s Group

All men, 18 and older, of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, are invited to join the group at 6:30 p.m. June 17 in the pavilion for the group’s monthly meeting.

Car show

The 25th Annual West End Car show is slated for June 27 at the West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert, rain or shine.

Gates open and car registration begins at 8 a.m.

There is an admission charge, though children 12 and under will get in free. Parking is also free.

Flea market and craft spaces are available.

Youth Field Day

Monroe County Youth Field Day has been announced for Sept. 11 at Camp Trexler. Registration will open June 28 via the web.

This event, which is free, and includes many outdoor activities, is open to youth ages 8 to 14.

Any and all necessary and required precautions will be taken to ensure the health and safety of all of the participants, their families and the volunteers.

Blood drive held

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Gilbert, is hosting a Red Cross blood drive at the Parish Hall, from 1 to 6 p.m. July 20.

Donors are asked to remember to wear a mask and bring a photo ID to the appointment.
