May 3 proclaimed Safe Kids Day

Carbon County Safe Kids has helped many families learn about being safe over the years.

To recognize this, the Carbon County commissioners on Thursday presented Mindy Graver, chairwoman of Carbon County Safe Kids, as well as Bill Richards and Mark Davis of state Sen. John Yudichak's office, with a proclamation naming May 3 as Safe Kids Day in the county.The proclamation states, "Safe Kids works to prevent childhood injuries from road safety to fire and drowning prevention; from sports safety to poison and falls prevention. Safe Kids works every day to reach parents and kids to provide helpful tips and tools on keeping children safe."To celebrate the day in the county, Safe Kids, Yudichak and Carbon Masonic Lodge 242 of Jim Thorpe are partnering to host the annual Community Safety Day on May 3 at Mauch Chunk Lake Park.The free event is open to all Carbon County families and will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.During the event, dozens of agencies and area organizations will be set up throughout the park to educate children and their parents about various safety issues, including water safety, animal safety, fire safety, bicycle safety, poison control and more.Emergency responders, including fire, police and emergency medical staff, will also be showcased. Two medical helicopters will make landings.In addition, fun activities such as skateboarding, face painting and the coconut crusher demonstration, which shows the importance of wearing a helmet, are planned, and free food and giveaways will also be available.Richards, Davis and Graver thanked the commissioners and county agencies for being supportive of the event.In other matters, the commissioners acted on the following items:• Approved a change order to the contract with Popple Construction Inc., of Laflin, for the Tamaqua Street improvements project in Banks Township, fiscal years 2010 and 2012. The contract decreases $1,048.42 to $74,621.28 because of changes in the scope of work.• Approved the Act 101, Section 903 Recycling Coordinator Grant application requesting 50 percent reimbursement of recycling hours and other eligible expenses for 2013. Estimated revenue is $12,500.• Approved a service continuation renewal of agreement with Johnson Controls Inc. covering the HVAC rooftop units preventive maintenance in the Carbon County courthouse annex for the term of July 1 through June 30, 2015, at a cost of $1,888.• Approved a request from the sheriff's office for authorization to submit a grant application through the U.S. Department of Justice Assistance Bulletproof Vests Partnership Act to help offset costs of new ballistic vests for deputies in the sheriff's office. The estimated cost is $5,040 and will pay up to half the cost.• Adopted a resolution honoring Devin Charles Frantz, member of Boy Scout Troop 82 of Lehighton, who completed his Eagle Scout project.
