The head of the Walnutport Police Department has responded to concerns voiced by a borough official last month over the receipt of late checks.
At last month’s council meeting, Councilman Michael Gaston said he was concerned why checks from the police department from last year had only just been turned in.
Gaston suggested at that time that changes would need to be made. Otherwise, he said the police department would owe the borough money.
Gaston noted there was $260 just in parking violations alone last year, and there were 10 citations for parking tickets for this year that had not yet been released.
Gaston said the borough wanted the tickets and checks, adding that between the $315 and $260, it’s taxpayers’ money.
Gaston said he wanted to see a police report turned in on a monthly basis.
Borough police Chief Pete Wayda addressed the situation at last week’s council meeting.
Wayda told council the borough code is pretty clear on police structure.
He told council he was aware there was an issue at last month’s meeting, and that a lengthy discussion took place.
“Is this how you always conduct your business?” Wayda asked.
Wayda asked that in the future, if council has any police questions, to refer them to the mayor.
“Your expertise is not in law enforcement, mine is,” Wayda said. “Please allow me to do my job moving forward.”
Afterward, council President William Turk apologized to Wayda, and added the situation last month “was out of bounds.”
