Weatherly school district positions set; no opposition in others

Four of the five candidates for four-year terms on the Weatherly Area School Board won both Democratic and Republican nominations in Tuesday’s primary election balloting, essentially putting themselves in positions to win seats on the board in November.

There were nine candidates running for four 4-year terms on the Hazleton School Board. Carbon voters from Banks Township and Beaver Meadows participated in that balloting, with the winners to be decided upon compilation of vote totals in the Luzerne County municipalities that help to make up that district.

Otherwise, there were no contests in Jim Thorpe, Panther Valley and Palmerton, with complimentary votes going to unchallenged candidates in those districts.

Weatherly

In the Weatherly district, which consists of voters in Lausanne, Lehigh and Packer townships, East Side and Weatherly boroughs and the Northern District of Kidder Township, the winners of nominations were Barbara Sipler, 185; Shay McGee, 166; Kenneth Jacoby III, 162; and Nancy Mulvaney, 160. Losing out was Suzanne Wentzler with 115 votes.

Mulvaney, 355; McGee, 331; Jacoby, 319; and Sipler, 305, won on the Republican side as well, followed by Wentzler with 300.

Hazleton

The Banks-Beaver Meadows Democratic vote totals in the Hazleton balloting went this way: Linda DeCosmo, 112; Ed Shemansky, 103; Gerald L. Feissner, 93; Anthony Ryba, 84; Alexander Chrisjon Van Hoekelen, 55; Ive-Eufracio Childs, 41; Amilcar A. Arroyo, 32; Marilyn Calderon, 27; and Yesenia Rodriguez, 21.

The GOP totals showed Shemansky leading the way with 114, followed by Ryba, 104; Feissner, 96; DeCosmo, 88; Van Hoekelen, 64; Childs, 48; and Rodriguez, 24.
