2021 primary election: Porpiglia wins Banks runoff in only major municipal contest in northern Carbon County
Democrat Rick Porpiglia won the only major contested municipal race in Northern Carbon County during primary election balloting, capturing his party’s nomination for a six-year term on the Banks Township Board of Supervisors.
Porpiglia defeated challenger David Mazur by a tally of 80-58. He will face Republican Richard P. Hornick Sr. in the general election. The latter was unopposed Tuesday and received 51 token votes.
In one other contested race north of the Broad Mountain on Tuesday, Judith Tranguch defeated Shirley A. Kessel by a vote of 74-22 to win the Republican nomination for a four-year term as inspector of elections in Beaver Meadows Borough.
Otherwise, uncontested race results in that part of the county were as follows:
Banks Township
Democrat Marian Lockwood was unopposed for that party’s nomination for a four-year term as tax collector and received 140 complimentary votes; David J. Bodnar Jr., also a Democrat, collected 124 token votes to win the nomination for a six-year term on the township’s board of auditors; fellow party member Bruce Knepper received 123 votes as an unopposed candidate for the nomination for a six-year term as constable; and Democrat David J. Bodnar Sr. collected 128 votes to win the nomination for a four-year term as judge of elections.
Beaver Meadows
Besides the minor race for the GOP nomination for the inspector of elections position in Beaver Meadows, voters there saw little activity in the way of filed candidates for various positions.
They are scheduled to elect a mayor, three council members, a tax collector and a judge of elections, all for four-year terms, and a constable to fill a six-year term, but there were no filed candidates on the Democratic side Tuesday.
Republican Mary Ellen Hines was unopposed in pursuit of the tax collector’s nomination and received 97 token votes, while John Tranguch Jr., also a Republican, collected 101complimentary votes as an unchallenged candidate for the four-year term as judge of elections.
East Side Borough
Three Democrats and four Republicans who were unopposed Tuesday in seeking four four-year terms on the borough council were all unopposed and will square off in November.
Winning nominations with token votes were Democrats John Marotta, 14; Sharon Mrozinski, 16; and Elizabeth Berger, 16; and Republicans Joseph G. Lachette Jr., 21; A. Esa, 19; Helen Jones, 14; and Michael Best, 20.
The only other candidate on the East Side ballot is Republican Lisa Jones, who is seeking her party’s nomination for the four-year term as tax collector. She received 29 complimentary votes.
East Side voters were also scheduled to fill four other positions, for which there were no candidates. They include mayor, judge of elections and inspector of elections, all for four-year terms, and a six-year term as constable.
Lausanne Township
There was only one candidate who appeared on the Lausanne Township ballot this time around. Carol Tulay, a Democrat running for her party’s nomination for a four-year term as tax collector, received 11 token votes.
Township voters are slated to fill six other positions in Lausanne this year, including one person for six-year terms on the board of supervisors, auditor and constable, and one person for four-year terms as auditor, judge of elections and inspector of elections.
Lehigh Township
There were two unopposed Republican candidates on the ballots in Lehigh Township.
Larry D. Skinner sought his party’s nomination for a six-year term on the board of supervisors and collected 81 votes, and Teresa Barna received 88 votes in her uncontested bid for the nomination for the four-year term as tax collector.
There were no candidates in the township for two positions on the board of auditors, one for a six-year term and the other for a two-year term; the constable nomination for a six-year term and judge of elections and an inspector of elections nomination, both for four-year terms.
Packer Township
Token votes went to three Republicans who were the only ones who appeared on the Packer Township ballots.
Sue Ann Gerhard received 147 votes to win her party’s nomination for a six-year term on the board of supervisors; Valeria Kane, seeking the bid for a four-year term as tax collector, garnered 178 votes; and Alicia Nyer received 174 votes to win the nomination for a four-year term as judge of elections.
There were no candidates in Packer for six-year and two-year terms as auditors, a six-year term as constable and a four-year term as inspector of elections.
Weatherly Borough
Five people who sought nominations for four four-year terms on the Weatherly Borough Council were unopposed within their parties Tuesday and will meet in the general election since they are unopposed within their parties.
Winning places on the general election ballot were Democrats Leslie Moyer, 95, and Theresa D’Andrea, 112, and Republicans Jeffery Miller, 226; Vincent A. Cuddeford II, 205; and Norman B. Richie, 214.
Deborah A. Kohler, a Republican, was unopposed in seeking her party’s nomination for the four-year term as tax collector and collected 282 votes.
Other unchallenged candidates were Democrat D’Andrea and Republican Virginia L. Houser, who sought seeking four-year terms as inspectors of elections in the East Ward, and received 74 and 170 votes, respectively, and Republican Ruth Sabol, who tallied 89 votes to win the nomination for the four-year term as inspector of elections in the West Ward.
There were no candidates in Packer for the judge of elections positions in either the East or West wards, both four-year positions, or the six-year term as constable.
