Lansford Borough Council has voted to reappoint a representative on the Lansford-Coaldale Joint Water Authority.

By a narrow 4-3 vote, borough council voted to appoint Richard Pogwist for another five-year term last week.A total of eight candidates submitted letters of interest for the position. On Wednesday, when council opened the floor to discuss candidates, Colin Jones nominated Pogwist.Jared Soto then nominated another candidate, John Tucker. But solicitor Michael Greek explained that there are no nominations for the position. He advised the board to vote on Pogwist before they could consider Tucker."The only way to appoint somebody is by a motion and then a second, and then you vote on that particular person," Greek said.In the roll call vote, Rose Mary Cannon, Soto, Jones and John Turcmanovich voted for Pogwist. Martin Ditsky, Matthew Walsh and Joseph Butrie voted against.Cannon said it is important to keep the same representative as the borough upgrades its sewer system."We're going with you because right now we're going to have that combined sewer project going on and I think having someone who has been there is a benefit."Seats on the joint water authority attract a lot of attention, not only for the importance of the position, but the compensation. Unlike many municipal boards, members are paid about $6,000 per year plus benefits.
