2021 primary election: Three of six school districts that involve Carbon municipalities have contested races next week

Three of the six school districts that include Carbon County municipalities will have primary election contests on Tuesday.

Voters in the Lehighton and Weatherly districts, which include all-county municipalities, and in the Hazleton Area School District, which includes Banks Township and Beaver Meadows Borough, have choices to make this time around.

Otherwise, there are no challenged races in the Jim Thorpe, Palmerton or Panther Valley districts.

Lehighton

In the Lehighton district, which encompasses East Penn, Franklin and Mahoning townships and Lehighton, Parryville and Weissport boroughs, seven Democrats are seeking that party’s nominations for four four-year terms that are up for grabs. The seven Democratic candidates are cross-filed onto the Republican ballot and are joined by an eighth candidate.

The cross-filed candidates are Walter Zlomsowitch, Joy Beers, Jay O. Barthel, D’Aché Zelrick, Jennifer Laible, Kerry L. Sittler and Barbara A. Bowes. The eighth candidate, Robert Zellner, appears only on the Republican ballot.

Weatherly

In the Weatherly district, there are five candidates seeking four nominations from the two major parties, and all of them are cross-filed. Voters in Lausanne, Lehigh and Packer townships, East Side and Weatherly boroughs and the Northern District of Kidder Township will participate in the district’s balloting.

They include Barbara Sipler, Kenneth Jacoby II, Shay McGee, Suzanne Wentzler and Nancy Mulvaney.

Hazleton

Voters in Banks Township and Beaver Meadows will have a choice among seven people who are cross-filed on both the Democratic and Republican ballots, and an eighth person who appears on just the Democratic side. Nominations by each party will be decided for the four four-year terms that are available. The remainder of the district is in Luzerne County municipalities.

The seven candidates who appear on both ballots are Gerald L. Feissner, Ive-Eufracio Childs, Linda DeCosmo, Ed Shemansky, Yesenia Rodriguez, Anthony Ryba and Alexander Chrisjon Von Hoekelen. The eighth candidate, Marilyn Calderon, is running only on the Democratic side.

Jim Thorpe

Both parties will nominate four people for four four-year terms on the Jim Thorpe school board. The district includes Jim Thorpe Borough, Penn Forest Township and the Southern District of Kidder Township.

There are only four candidates for the positions, and all are cross-filed. They include Richard Flacco, Jerry Strubinger, Dennis J. McGinley Jr. and Glenn F. Confer Sr.

Palmerton

The situation in the Palmerton district is the same as that in Jim Thorpe, meaning there are only four people running for four four-year terms.

The district includes Bowmanstown and Palmerton boroughs and Towamensing and Lower Towamensing townships.

Seeking the Democratic and Republican nominations are Stacey A. Connell, Erin Snyder, Earl J. Paules and Danielle Paules.

Panther Valley

The district also has the same makeup as Jim Thorpe and Palmerton, with four people seeking four four-year terms. The district includes Lansford, Nesquehoning and Summit Hill boroughs from Carbon County and Coaldale Borough in Schuylkill County.

Appearing on both ballots are Keith A. Krapf, Steven Foster, Shawn J. Hoben and Renee DeMelfi.
