2021 primary election: Contested races exist in Lower Towamensing and Palmerton

There are just two contested races on the municipal level in Lower Carbon County on primary election day, May 18. They include a Republican runoff between two people seeking that party’s nomination for a six-year term on the Lower Towamensing Township Board of Supervisors and a two-candidate race for the GOP nomination for the four-year term as mayor of Palmerton.

Otherwise, there are no challenges in other races in those two municipalities, nor are there contested races in Bowmanstown Borough and Towamensing Township.

Lower Towamensing Township

Republican voters will have to decide between Terry Kuehner and Jay Mullikin for the nomination for the supervisors’ race. There is no Democratic candidate.

Meanwhile, Maxine R. Scherer, a Republican, is running unopposed for the four-year term as tax collector, and Louise M. Koons, a Democrat, is unopposed for the four-year term as judge of elections in the township’s South District.

There are no candidates for the other positions that are slated to be filled this year by the electorate. They include a six-year term as constable, two auditors’ positions, for two- and six-year terms, respectively, a four-year term as judge of elections in the North District, and four-year terms as inspectors of elections in both the North and South Districts.

Palmerton Borough

The race for the Republican nomination for mayor in Palmerton is between William Gallagher and Don Herrmann. There is no Democratic candidate.

There are four four-year terms on the Palmerton Borough Council that are set to be filled in November. While there is no race in the primary, there will be in the general election, as seven candidates are aspiring to the terms. They include Democrats Randolph Gursky, Alyson Nicole Krawchuk and Kris W. Hoffner and Republicans Raberta Hans, Cory Kepner, Richard L. Nothstein and Michael J. Ballard.

Lisa M. Nemeth, a Republican, is running unopposed for a four-year term as tax collector while other uncontested candidates in the borough include Lisa Snell Kern and Richard M. Snell, Republicans who are running for four-year terms as judge of elections and inspector of elections in the Middle District, respectively.

There are no candidates running in the borough for the six-year term as constable and four-year terms as judges of elections and inspector of elections in either the East or West districts. They are all four-year terms.

Bowmanstown Borough

There are no challenged races in Bowmanstown Borough this time around, although there will be a council race in November.

Democrats Robert Moyer and Ben Price and Republicans Donna L. Winter, Candace Rodrigues and Darren Thomas are all unopposed for four nominations for four-year terms on the board, with four of the five to be elected in November.

Zachary Synder, a Republican, is the lone candidate for the four-year term as mayor, as is Democrat Maria E. Smith, who is seeking the four-year term as tax collector, and Republican Salvatore Lizzio, who is running unopposed for the six-year term as constable.

No one is running in Bowmanstown for the four-year terms as judge of elections or inspector of elections.

Towamensing Township

John Kleintop, a Democrat, is the lone candidate for his party’s nomination for the six-year term as supervisor in Towamensing Township that is to be filled this year by township voters. There is no GOP candidate.

The other candidates on the ballot are all seeking poll positions - judges of elections or inspectors of elections, all four-year terms - and are unopposed. They are Democrats Wendy K. Hoppel, seeking the inspector of elections post in the North District, and Natalie Kleintop, who is running for judge of elections in the South-II District; and Republicans Michael Christman, seeking the judge of elections position in the North District, and Mary Anne Shafer, who aspires to be the inspector of elections in the South II District.

No one is running in the township for the six-year term as constable, nor the four-year terms of judge of elections and inspector of elections in the South I district.
