Schuylkill woman is sentenced to jail term for theft counts

A Schuylkill County woman was sentenced to a prison term on Thursday in Carbon County on theft and receiving stolen property charges.

Amber Lee Strohl, 33, of Saint Clair, was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to serve three to one day less 24 months in the county prison. She previously pleaded to the charges.Strohl was arrested by Weatherly police for an incident on June 16, 2014, when she took a GMC Jimmy and also jewelry from a home in the 100 block of Lauderburn Avenue.Strohl, an Army veteran, said she stole the jewelry to sell at a pawnshop in Hazleton to get money for a drug addiction.Defense attorney Matthew J. Mottola said his client suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder from her time in the military. He also said she suffered a back injury while in the service which led to her becoming addicted, first to painkillers, then to heroin.Strohl said she spent 41 days in an inpatient rehabilitation program, but it was not the first time she spent time in a rehab program, and she later went back on drugs. She told Matika after the latest rehab, "I came back a different person."She added, "It made me a stronger person."She said she moved to Saint Clair to get away from people who were influencing her. However, Donna Knepper, the victim of the thefts, said she knew Strohl from the time she worked at the county prison. She said that Strohl would go into a program and leave the prison, only to return again. She said it was like a "revolving door" at the prison for Strohl. She also she feared that Strohl will be back again in prison, noting prior treatment she had received.Strohl responded, "I'm not a lost cause."Matika said it was a "vicious cycle" Strohl was in and he also worried that she might come back into the system.Strohl said she is continuing with an outpatient counseling program, attending sessions weekly and seeing other counselors monthly. In addition to the jail term, Matika ordered Strohl to render 50 hours of community service when released on parole, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendations for treatment, zero tolerance for D&A use, pay court costs of about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation and parole. She was ordered to make restitution of $1,292 to the victim for a diamond ring that was not recovered from the pawnshop. All the other jewelry taken was recovered. She was given credit for 41 days already spent in jail on the charges.Matika allowed her to serve the time on consecutive weekends so she can continue her counseling sessions during the week. She will begin the jail term at 7 p.m. today.
