A White Haven man was taken into custody twice Thursday, the second time after fleeing the police station in handcuffs.
The incident began late Thursday morning when police found out a wanted person was at a Walnut Street home in the borough.Police Chief Tom Szoke said officers went to the home looking for Bruce Klem, 30, Buffalo Street, and after about an hour of attempting to get inside, they finally entered and arrested Klem.Szoke said Klem was wanted on three bench warrants and an additional warrant for access device fraud and theft, all filed by White Haven police.Police brought Klem back to the police station for processing. Szoke said he turned his back momentarily while handling paperwork when Klem, still in handcuffs, ran out the side door of the police station and fled around noon.Szoke said Klem ran to a home on Main Street, where someone cut and destroyed the 21-year-old handcuffs. A foot chase ensued from that home, he said, but Klem was eventually recaptured by Kidder Township and Freeland police and taken back to the station. At the station, Klem complained of soreness and was evaluated on scene by Freeland Ambulance personnel.White Haven police charged him with institutional vandalism, a misdemeanor, and escape, a felony, for the Thursday incident. He was taken to Magisterial District Judge Ronald Swank's office in Wright Township for arraignment. Swank set bail at $20,000 on the new charges, and an additional $20,000 for the access device fraud case that stems from a Dec. 9 offense in White Haven.Unable to immediately post the money, Klem was taken to Luzerne County Correctional Facility in Wilkes-Barre and awaits a preliminary hearing.Distributed by Tribune Content Agency LLC
