Franklin Township has endorsed a proposed fire and emergency training center in Carbon County.
By a unanimous measure, the township's board of supervisors recently agreed to submit a letter of support to the Carbon County Commissioners for the center, which would be located on 10 to 12 acres of land in the emergency complex on the Broad Mountain in Nesquehoning. The center is expected to cost between $5 million and $10 million, which commissioners hope to fund through grants. The township is one of the few municipalities to voice their support of the proposed center.Earlier this week, Lehighton Borough Council said it needed more details before it would support the center.Last week, Lower Towamensing Township rebuffed the county's request asking for a letter of support for the center, saying it wants more detailed information before it offers a letter of support. Two weeks ago, Bowmanstown Borough Council tabled the request.Other businessIn other business, supervisors:• Approved Susan Dorward's minor subdivision plan pending the township engineer's comments.• Agreed to give Lehighton a letter of support for their application of a grant to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.• Approved the annual Youth Fishing Day to be held by the Pohopoco Rod & Gun Club on May 3.• Agreed to sign a condition of agreement between the township police department and the North Central Highway Safety Network.
