Navy Club celebrates 5 years

At the monthly meeting in September, the Navy Club of Carbon County officially became 5 years old.

The meeting was dedicated to a celebration of that milestone of Ship 260's history.In an address by Commander Scott Reinhart, various activities over the last five years were highlighted. The Navy Club offers a program, "Honoring Our Flag" to schools, scouts and civic groups, and over the past several years the program has been presented over 35 times.The club was chartered as Ship 260 of the Navy Club of the United States on Sept. 28, 2009.Since the first year, members have been actively involved with service to the communities of Carbon County and surrounding areas. Besides the Flag Program, members have participated in Veterans Day parades, Memorial Day parades, 9/11 memorial services, patriotism rallies, and other veterans programs. They have donated to the Carbon County Food Bank and presented awards to JROTC cadets at Panther Valley High School.The anniversary celebration was attended by most of Ship 260's members, and special guests past National Navy Club Commandant William Flail, state Rep. Doyle Heffley, Carbon County Veterans Affairs director Henry Desrosiers, and members of other Navy Club ships.During the program, Desrosiers presented the ship with a certificate of appreciation from the county commissioners for the service to Carbon County.The Navy Club is open to all honorably discharged veterans from the maritime branches of the military, including Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Wartime Merchant Marines.The club meets the last Monday of the month at VFW Post 8008 in Nesquehoning. Meetings start at 7 p.m.
