Weissport Council reconsiders county fire training facility

At the May 4 meeting, Weissport Borough Council reconsidered throwing its support behind the Carbon County commissioners with regards to the proposed countywide fire training facility.

The issue has brought mixed emotions throughout the county, and Weissport has also debated whether to show support for the county's quest for funding to move forward with a new training facility and emergency operations center for the Emergency Management Agency or not. While Weissport had unanimously passed a motion to provide a letter of support for the project and the county's quest for funding in late March, at the April meeting Councilman Arland Moyer brought up some concerns about the project including a new communications center. In her last action as Weissport vice president and council member, Susan Pywar agreed, and a motion unanimously passed to withdraw support. At the recent meeting, held Monday, Councilman Arland Moyer said, "I know that I am going to make an ass of myself, but I was given a lot of bad information," in speaking about the emergency training center."I was misinformed, as we have all saw in the newspaper and television, it will not include a new communications center but be a training center for all of the police, fire and emergency personnel in the county," Moyer said.Moyer made a motion to have council draft a letter of support for the county's project to seek funding for the training center.Council President Gene Kershner provided the second to the motion and council passed the action unanimously. In other matters, following an executive session for personnel purposes, council made a motion to remove Andrea Davis as treasurer for the Borough of Weissport and appoint Jillyan Sterling to the position of treasurer, in addition to her duties as borough secretary. There was no action taken on appointing a new council vice president. In addition, there was no action taken on filling the vacant council seat due to the resignation of Pywar. Pywar submitted her letter of resignation during council's April 21 meeting, citing "work and life commitments" as her reason for leaving.Moyer also reported under the streets committee report that the work under the Thomas J. McCall Memorial Bridge should be completed and the current work crews leaving the area within the next two weeks.
