Man pleads guilty for gun threat
A Carbon County man who pointed a shotgun at another man and threatened to shoot and kill him, entered a guilty plea on Monday in county court.
Norman G. Heft, 55, of Palmerton, pleaded guilty to one count of recklessly endangering another person and possession of drug paraphernalia. Before the start of the plea hearing President Judge Roger N. Nanovic rejected a plea bargain approved by the district attorney's office in which it recommended a probation sentence be imposed in the case.Nanovic said the REAP charged carries with it a deadly weapon enhancement provision under state sentencing guidelines noting a prison term between a minimum of six or seven months be imposed.Nanovic criticized the DA's office for making such a recommendation of probation considering the facts and the deadly weapon enhancement provision. After consulting with his attorney, Brett J. Riegel, Heft said he would enter his plea knowing he faced a jail term at the time of sentencing.Heft was arrested by state police at Lehighton for an incident at 90 Milton Drive, in Towamensing Township, on Feb. 6, 2014. He called troopers and reported his house had people in it robbing him. When troopers arrived no one was found in the home other than the defendant. In speaking with Heft, the state police report indicated he appeared under the influence of a controlled substance. The investigation revealed that Heft pointed a shotgun at a Donald Fritz and threatened to kill him.Riegel requested that the court order a presentence investigation report be prepared by the adult probation office. He said information he will provide at the time of sentencing would indicate Fritz was among others robbing Heft's residence when the confrontation occurred.Nanovic agreed to the PSI, stating it was Heft's right to request one and deferred sentencing to a later date.
