Community gets a health check at fair
A grip strength test and a five-minute "workout of the day" were just a few activities available for participants in Lehighton Area School District's first annual wellness fair held Thursday night.
Dubbed "Get Fit in Carbon County," the free event featured over 25 vendors, each promoting health and wellness in the community.St. Luke's Miner's Memorial Hospital offered any takers, including Lehighton Area Middle School seventh grader Austin Fritzinger, the chance to take a grip strength test.Fritzinger scored above average with a grip strength of 80 pound grip.The two-hour fair drew a good early crowd in the Lehighton High School gymnasium."I think there is a lot of really good information here," said Mark Beck, of Lehighton. "I'm approaching the wrong side of 50, but I want to stay active and I think there are a lot of good groups here like walking clubs and health clubs that can help you dothat."The CrossFit TC Unplugged health club recruited several members of the Lehighton Indians football squad to help at its vendor station.Chrissy Mayernik, CrossFit owner and coach, said they have developed a training partnership with the team."They're here helping us out by doing some training and conditioning," Mayernik said. "Our program is suited for all fitness levels. Today, the football players are going through the five-minute workout of the day."The workout included the push press and burpees, which is a full-body exercise squat thrust.Mayernik said anyone wanting to try out CrossFit, located at 243 S. 8th St. in Lehighton, can do so during its free week from April 20-26.The district's wellness committee, chaired by board member Rocky Ahner, organized the event."With the steady flow and positive comments from attendees and presenters, I would say the first annual event was a success," he said."It makes you feel good to be part of an event that people enjoyed, the presenters want to return and the committee cares."
