Blue Sox rally for first win of season
Todd Heisler knew it.
So did his team. And on Tuesday, they finally proved it."These boys are way better than an 0-5 record," Heisler said soon after his Tamaqua Blue Sox rallied for their first win of the season.Tamaqua entered the Schuylkill-Berks Legion contest against Schuylkill Valley winless. But thanks to a late comeback, and then a run in extra innings, the Blue Sox were able to overcome a four-run deficit and celebrate a victory."I knew that they were better than our record," Heisler said. "They even knew that. We have a good core of players here that just weren't hitting the ball hard yet."They hung in there today. They didn't give up. They came back and they finally got what they deserve - a victory."The Falcons, especially Jeff Yordy, were the ones hitting the ball hard early. Yordy hit a solo home run in the first inning and added a two-run shot in the second to help his team grab a 5-1 lead. The Blue Sox, however, came around with some timely hitting to chip away at the deficit.Tamaqua also received strong performances from relievers Connor Hartung and Brady Akins to finish off the job. After closing to 5-3 with single runs in the second and fourth frames, the Blue Sox were down to their final three outs to start the home seventh. Nick Breiner gave the team a spark with an infield single and later scored on a three-base throwing error. Moments later, Matt Minchhoff tied the score with an RBI triple.Akins, who earned the pitching win, had a 1-2-3 eighth inning, getting the final out with his sixth strikeout. In the bottom of the frame, he was hoping to deliver at the plate. Ed Titus started the eighth with an infield single, and Russ Blaker followed with a walk. After the two runners moved up a base, Akins looked to provide the game-winning hit.Instead, Schuylkill Valley intentionally walked Akins to set up a force at every base. The move backfired when Brady Moyer, with a full count, drilled a bullet up the middle to score Titus from third with the game-winning run."All I could think about when they decided to intentionally walk me was I only have three hits on the year," Akins said. "I just thought that was really bold strategy ... Fortunately, we came out on top. We wanted a win in the worst way.""It just feels real good," Moyer said. "We all just went up there trying to put the ball in play. I just hit it as hard as I could. It was a win we earned as a team.""BRADY" BUNCH ...One Brady got the job done in the batter's box, while the other Brady did so on the mound. Brady Moyer led the Blue Sox with two singles, two RBIs and a run scored. Moyer scored Tamaqua's first run of the game and brought in the game-winning run. Akins tossed three innings of scoreless relief. He recorded six strikeouts, while only allowing two hits. He threw 44 pitches, 32 of them for strikes. "It's in the name," said Akins about the performances of the Bradys.UP NEXT ...The Blue Sox return to action with home games the next two days.
