Crews contain garage fire in Bowmanstown

Fire crews worked quickly after a fire broke out Tuesday morning at the rear of a garage behind a home in Bowmanstown.

Borough fire Chief Michael Spairana said firefighters were dispatched at about 6 a.m. to the single home at 649 Lime St.

Spairana said it was a room and content fire, and the house was a two-story with two-car garage.

“Maybe 30 years ago the original owner built an additional garage, and behind it is a room,” Spairana said. “It was contained to that area; there’s no extension.”

Spairana said the homeowners were inside at the time, and supposedly woke to the smell of smoke. Residents were examined for smoke inhalation, but were OK, Spairana said.

He said the damage was minor, and added it took firefighters less than 15 minutes to knock the fire down.

“I believe they can go back in it,” he said. “The biggest problem is they have two newborn kids.”

Spairana said the Red Cross has been notified.

He said the cause of the fire is believed to be electrical, and added that a state fire marshal was called.

Spairana said Palmerton and Parryville fire departments assisted at the scene.

“They made a good stop,” he said. “I think it went really well.”
