For the second time this year, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has fined the New Jersey Zinc Company for safety violations at its Palmerton plant.
OSHA levied $1,050 in fines in the wake of two accidents at the facility, the first one resulting in second- and third-degree burns over 70 percent of the body of Clair Stroup, Palmerton R.2, and the second one resulting in the death of John Patterson of Lehighton, who died of complications after his clothes were ignited while he was assisting in efforts to control a fire in the zinc dust plant.Earlier in the year, OSHA fined NJZ for what it called "serious" safety violations at the plant.
