The tax bill owed to the city of Pottsville by Schuylkill County is no longer overdue.

Schuylkill County Treasurer Linda Marchalk said Friday an employee of her office gave the two checks to the city treasurer’s office.

“They are paid as of today. I’m relieved that this one more matter resolved that we can cross off our list to do,” Marchalk said.

One check was for $58,245.27 and the other for $12,854.72, which represent the county’s share of wages and benefits and office expenses owed for the county’s share of work associated in collecting real estate taxes for 2020.

“It’s a good Friday,” Marchalk said.

An employee is going to send an email to city Treasurer Ellen Micka asking when the county will receive the 2020 county real estate funds the city collected.

City leaders were pleased Friday the situation has been rectified. Mayor James T. Muldowney and city Councilman Mark Atkinson said they are “happy” the county paid up.

“I look forward to working with the county in the future,” Muldowney said.

City Administrator Thomas A. Palamar said “we are all glad we could move forward in serving our residents, which is our most important common goal.”

Commissioners approved an agreement between the city and county earlier this month that states the county will share one-third of the expense of the city’s tax office with the exception of the deputy clerk handling city trash accounts, which the county shall be charged at one-half of the one-third expense of the salary and benefits for that position.

Upon payment of the county’s invoice for its share of the 2020 city tax office, the city shall remit 2020 county real estate tax funds.

The Pottsville Area School District also pays one-third the cost of collecting the taxes per the Local Tax Collection Law of May 25, 1945.

The county had not paid the city for the year, resulting in the city passing a resolution in November withholding payment of tax revenue until it was reimbursed for services performed.

Marchalk said she had received invoices but wanted a more thorough accounting of work performed.
