Galen Glen Winery to host eighth annual cook-off with a twist

Galen Glen Winery is looking for chili aficionados to choose which chili is the best.

The Andreas winery is hosting its eighth annual Chili Cookoff with a twist because of the pandemic. The event benefits the West Penn Fire Company and will be a to-go style event.

The winery says the cook-off will be different from years past, but the spirit of the event remains.

“Our entire team at Galen Glen Winery really wanted to continue the tradition of the chili cook-off and support the West Penn Fire Company,” said Sarah Troxell of Galen Glen. “This is our way to say thank you to the volunteer members of the West Penn Fire Company who donate their time to keep us all safe despite COVID.”

This year, the business partnered with Chef Mark Muszynski of Curious Goods at the Bake Oven Inn, a Germansville farm-to-table restaurant, to create three unique chilis - Smoky Beef and 3 Bean, Southwest Pork and Pozole with green chilies and Calypso Chicken Chili with jerk seasoning and Caribbean peppers.

Those who wish to judge can do so by purchasing a chili cook-off sampler kit for $25 plus tax, which includes three 8-ounce samples and a bottle of Galen Glen wine.

Troxell said kits can be picked up via curbside pickup at the winery between Jan. 22 and 24 and Jan. 29 and 31 from noon to 5 p.m.

Rating cards will also be provided and should be filled out and returned by Feb. 1. The best chili will then be announced on Galen Glen’s Facebook page on Feb. 2.

Participants will also receive a coupon to use at Curious Goods and $5 from each kit will go to the West Penn Fire Department.

Kits should be preordered on the Galen Glen website at www.galenglen.com/purchase.php.

The annual chili cook-off has raised thousands of dollars for fire company since its inception in 2014.

Galen Glen Winery is located at 255 Winter Mountain Drive, Andreas.
