Carbon County has been awarded nearly $25,000 to help its five senior centers with updating, technology, nutritional services, furniture and promotional materials at the centers.
On Thursday, the county commissioners approved the award of funding in the amount of $24,691 to be distributed equally to the Jim Thorpe/Penn-Kidder Senior Center, Lehighton Senior Center, Palmerton Senior Center, Panther Valley Senior Center, and Weatherly Senior Center. That means each center will receive $4,938.20.
Susan Zeigler, administrator of the county Area Agency on Aging, which oversees the senior centers, said that the money will help improve or update the centers.
Updates under the grant will include purchasing iPads for the center managers to be used when checking participants in or to take pictures; sound bars and speakers for the smart TV to ensure everyone can hear; upgrade the current PA systems; purchasing freezers to store frozen in-home meals, desks for the center managers and tables for one of the senior centers.
In addition, some of the funds would help cover the cost of the CoPilot computer system annual fee, cover some of the cost for rent and purchase new equipment for the annual Senior Games.
