Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 16

The Weatherly boys won their fourth game in a row Saturday, posting a nonleague victory over North Schuylkill.

Meanwhile, the Northwestern girls remained undefeated by downing Wilson.

Other area winners included the Northwestern boys, and the Lehighton, Marian and Panther Valley girls.

In swimming action, Tamaqua split with Saucon Valley.

BOYS BASKETBALL

North Schuylkill-Weatherly

Weatherly won its fourth game in a row, posting a 54-40 nonleague victory over North Schuylkill.

Scotty Zoscin, held to just two first-quarter points, tallied 13 in the second quarter to help the Wreckers (4-1) open up an eight-point halftime lead.

Zoscin finished with a game-high 26 points, while Antonio Colecio chipped in with eight. Zoscin passed 1,200 career points, the 10th Weatherly boys player to reach that figure.

The Spartans received a team-high 11 points from Jack Flynn.

Wilson-Northwestern

A big third quarter helped Northwestern gain a 44-34 Colonial League victory over Wilson.

Dylan Witkowski scored seven of his 12 points in the third frame as the Tigers outscored their opponent by an 18-9 margin to gain a sizable lead.

Nick Henry led the winners with 13 points, while Jared Stitzel contributed 10.

The Warriors received a game-high 18 points from Nashawn Jones.

Northwestern improved to 3-2 overall and 3-0 in the league.

Roberto Clemente-Tamaqua

Tamaqua’s Nathan Gregoire poured in 18 points, but the Blue Raiders dropped a 59-54 nonleague contest to Roberto Clemente Charter School.

RCCS’s Joel Pena matched Gregoire with 18 points, scoring seven in the first quarter when his team jumped out to an early lead. Christian Ceballos finished with 16.

Tamaqua (0-4) also received 13 points from Luke Verta.

Hamburg had four players score in double figures to help gain a 62-57 nonleague victory over Panther Valley.

Hunter Shuey paced the winners with 16 points, while Ethan Kennedy added 14 including four three-pointers.

The Panthers (2-3) received 16 points and 18 rebounds from Stephen Hood. Chase Weaver contributed 13 points, with Ben Kindt adding 12. Both Weaver and Kindt connected on three three-pointers.

Salisbury-Lehighton

Lehighton’s Hailey Miller poured in a game-high 25 points to lead the Indians to a 61-31 nonconference victory over Salisbury.

The winners outscored their opponent by a 32-10 margin in the middle frames to build a huge lead.

Abigail Meckes added 11 points to the Lehighton (1-3) cause, while Taylor Bowman and Aaliyah Fisher both finished with eight.

The Falcons (0-2) received a team-high 15 points from Quinn Wittman.

The Indians also cruised to a 33-4 win in the JV game.

Carly Minchoff led the Fillies (1-2) with nine points, while Frankie Martinelli and Ashley Pleban both finished with eight.

Marian used a 12-6 third quarter to take control of the contest.

The Blue Devils (0-2) received a game-high 11 points from Faith Gottshall, while Madison Wasser added seven.

Northwestern’s balanced scoring attack and tough defense combined to give the Tigers a 36-21 Colonial League victory over Wilson.

Alexandra Lister and Sara Ledeboer both finished with eight points for Northwestern (5-0), while Kailyn Jones and Paige Sevrain each added seven.

The Warriors (0-2), who fell behind 13-2 after the first quarter, received a game-high nine points from Makayla Digi.

Hamburg-Panther Valley

Erika Dubosky’s double-double helped Panther Valley post a 45-35 nonleague win over Hamburg.

Dubosky scored a game-high 21 points and pulled down a team-leading 11 rebounds.

The Panthers (3-2) led by just four after three quarters, but outscored their opponent 12-6 in the final frame to secure the win.

Sera Robin, who was 6-of-6 at the foul line in the fourth period, finished with 12 points and five boards, while Maddison Maynard added nine points. Riley Wehr chipped in with nine rebounds.

For the Hawks, Lauren Sterner tallied a team-high 11 points.

Minersville used a second-half surge to gain a 45-41 nonleague win over Tamaqua.

Abigail Adams scored a game-high 24 points for the Battlin’ Miners, who trailed by five at halftime. Shea Hossler contributed 13 points to the winning cause.

The Blue Raiders (3-2) received a team-high 17 points from Treyce Wingler, while Makenna Kane chipped in with eight. Emma Hope also pulled down 19 rebounds.

Pleasant Valley-PM West

Pocono Mountain West opened Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play Friday with a 49-32 win over visiting Pleasant Valley.

After a close opening quarter, the Panthers outscored the Bears 15-2 in the second to pull away with a comfortable lead.

The Panthers’ A. Simmons led all scorers with 22 points, while A. Ford chipped in with 10 points.

Sam Merklin was the lone Bear to hit double figures with 10 points, while teammate E. Muir followed just missed with eight.

Saucon Valley-Tamaqua

Tamaqua and Saucon Valley split their nonleague swim meet.

The Blue Raiders rolled to a 114-29 victory in the boys meet, while the Panthers edged Tamaqua by a 95-88 score in the girls competition.

Joey Lescavage had a pair of individual wins, taking the 200 IM and 500 freestyle, while the Raider boys also captured all three relays. Other winners included Ethan Amershek (50 free) and Stephen Behun (100 breast).

In the girls meet, Lily McNutt (200 IM, 500 free) won two events for Tamaqua. Other Raiders with wins included Nicole Aguero-Ramirez (200 free) and Hailey Toth (diving).

Tamaqua knocked off Blue Mountain, 51-37.

Zander Coleman had a game-high 17 points for the Blue Raiders, while Spencer Dennis added 12.

Tamaqua-Nativity

Tamaqua improved to 4-0 with a 50-7 victory over Nativity.

The Blue Raiders’ Spencer Dennis led all scorers with 15 points.

8TH GRADE

Tamaqua-Weatherly

Tamaqua posted a 37-20 victory over Weatherly.

Declan Coleman led the Blue Raiders with 15 points, while the Wreckers received a game-high 17 points from McKeegan.

Tamaqua-Nativity

Tamaqua improved to 3-0 with a 46-18 win over Nativity.

Mason Ligenza led the Blue Raiders with 12 points, while Cooper Ansbach and Declan Coleman both finished with 11.

Lehighton-Panther Valley

Lehighton cruised to a 42-14 victory over Panther Valley.

Cole Dietz led the Indians with 13 points and seven assists, while Blake Roberts added nine points and 10 rebounds.

Brady Jones paced the Panthers with nine points.

7TH GRADE

Lehighton-Panther Valley

Panther Valley edged Lehighton, 21-20.

Brody Briener scored 12 points to lead the Panthers, while Danny Wehr chipped in with eight.

For the Indians, Jayse Lawrence finished with nine points.
