DEP hosts mine fire meeting

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection will hold a public information session to update the public about the Jeanesville mine fire, which is located in Banks Township, Carbon County.

The session will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Tresckow Volunteer Fire Company, 26 East Oak St., Tresckow.The fire is currently burning on both abandoned mine land and on an actively mined site off of Route 93, on the border of Luzerne and Carbon counties.DEP's Air Quality Program and Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation did air quality testing at five locations around the Jeansville mine fire recently.The gases tested at each location included: Oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and methane. The weather was clear on the day of the investigation with winds primarily blowing in a northwest to southeast direction at 5 to 5.5 mph.Based on the results of the gas testing, no dangerous levels of mine gas were recorded on the day of the investigation."The fire has generated public attention, and we want to provide citizens with details about the current status of the fire, plans for addressing it and the impacts it might have on the public," DEP Deputy Secretary for Active and Abandoned Mine Operations John Stefanko said.The property is owned by Pagnotti Enterprises of Wilkes-Barre. Hazleton Shaft Corporation, currently leasing the portion of the property that is actively being mined, has been extinguishing the fire within the permitted area as the mining progresses.DEP intends to hire a contractor to begin drilling boreholes to define the limits of the fire.People in need of an accommodation as provided for in the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 should contact Colleen Connolly or make accommodations through the Pennsylvania AT&T Relay Service at 800-654-5984 (TDD).
