Rush considers vendors 'do not call' list

Everybody's familiar with how to get on a "no call" list to block telemarketers. What if you could also get on a "no canvas" list?

During a meeting Thursday, Rush Township supervisors decided to draw up an ordinance which would require permits for commercial vendors who want to canvas the township. The ordinance would include a fee schedule for the permits which would cover the township's cost for doing background checks on the vendors. It would also include provisions to allow residents to get on a "no canvas" list, preventing vendors from calling on their homes. In other business, supervisors:• Approved the purchase of 16 boxes of road flares for the fire companies and police department to use, at a cost of $37.08 per box.• Accepted the resignation letters of Andrew Morgan, an employee of the road department, and Richard Bekesy, a part-time police officer. The township will advertise for additional part-time police officers and a road department employee.• Awarded a $3,000 bid for the township's used wood chipper to Corey Wagner, who provided two phone numbers but no address. Wagner was the highest of ten bidders.• Noted that the township will hold a recycling event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at the township building. The cost to recycle freon appliances is $15, televisions $10, and large projection and console televisions $20.• Noted that funds are still available for the low income housing rehabilitation program. Eligible homeowners can receive financial assistance in the form of grants/non-interest bearing loans. Homeowners can get a Housing Rehabilitation Application at the municipal building, or by calling the township's consultant at (570) 875-7320.• The supervisors held a moment of silence to honor former Supervisor and Planning Commission member Kenny Hoppes, who passed away last week. They appointed Michele Griffiths to serve out Hoppes's term on the Planning Commission.
