Woman gets prison term for endangering daughter

A Carbon County woman was sentenced to a county prison term on Monday afternoon in the county court after previously admitting putting her daughter in danger with illegal drugs.

Megan M. Labyack, 31, of Lehighton, was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to serve three to one day less 24 months in prison on a charge of endangering the welfare of a child.

She was arrested following incidents on March 4, 2019, in Lehighton. Police were involved in an ongoing drug investigation when they made a traffic stop. Labyack was one of the passengers in the vehicle who fled on foot. Through the investigation police learned she was staying in a room at the Mahoning Inn along Route 443.

Police went to the room and found Labyack in the room along with illegal substances including heroin and fentanyl. Drug paraphernalia was also found between two beds. Labyack’s then 2-year-old daughter was found within reach of the drugs.

Serfass rejected a request to put Labyack on house arrest because of the nature of the charge.

She was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, supply a DNA sample, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and when paroled render 100 hours of community service.

She will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. on Feb. 8. The delayed start of the jail term is due to a COVID-19 flare-up at the county prison.
