Nesquehoning OKs tax increase for 2021

Nesquehoning residents will see a slightly higher borough tax bill in 2021.

During borough council’s last meeting of the year last week, council adopted its final budget, which calls for a 0.75-mill increase.

That means that a $100,000 home assessed at $50,000 will pay around $37.50 more in real estate taxes than in 2020.

The millage breakdown for the budget shifted slightly than the preliminary budget adopted in November. The borough’s millage now stands at 19.3.

The $1,887,801.19 general fund is now 17.1 mills, up from 16.95 mills that was proposed in November; the fire fund is now 1.85 mills, down from 1.95 mills that was in the preliminary figures; and the recreation fund millage is now 0.35, down from the 0.4 mills that had been proposed.

Last month, council President David Hawk said that the reason for the tax increase was due to a decrease in the tax millage value, as well as contractual increases in employee salaries and benefit costs.

In related budget matters, the borough reminds residents that sewer and sanitation bills will remain the same for 2021, but the base rate for water has now increased to $75 for 7,000 gallons of water.

The Nesquehoning Borough Authority said last month that consumption over the 7,000 gallons will be $5.72 per 1,000 gallons of water.
