Donations sought for family of Marian student who lost everything in house fire

Fire destroyed one home and damaged two others in the borough of Shenandoah Saturday night, including the home of a family whose daughter attends Marian Catholic High School in Hometown.

Firefighters were called to the area of West Oak and Gilbert streets just before 6:30 p.m. for a report of a house fire. They were told by Shenandoah police that smoke was coming from the second and third floors of one of the buildings.

Firefighters could be seen cutting holes in the roofs of 332 and 330 W. Oak St. in an attempt to let heat and smoke escape, allowing firefighters inside to find the fire and extinguish it.

About 30 minutes into the fire, flames shot out of the back of 332 W. Oak St. and then eventually from the roof on the southwest corner of the building.

At that point, firefighters were able to knock down the majority of the fire and bring it under control around 7:30 p.m.

The home at 332 W. Oak St., which neighbors said was occupied by a man and woman who were at work at the time, sustained extensive damage. The 332 W. Oak St. home appeared to be destroyed. The home at 330 W. Oak St. sustained fire, smoke and water damage, while a third home at 328 W. Oak St. sustained lesser amounts of damage, including smoke and water.

In an email that he sent to families of Marian, the Rev. Allen Hoffa, head of school, said the family of Alexandra Reyes, a senior at Marian, was among those who were victims of the “devastating fire.”

Saying the family “lost everything,” Hoffa, pastor of St. Joseph Parish of the Panther Valley, Summit Hill, requested “prayers and support” for the family.

The Marian family is requesting donations to assist the family.

Hoffa said the following basic needs will help the family: gift cards for food, clothing and basic necessities. The family identified Boscov’s, Walmart and Boyer’s as the primary locations that they have access to from their temporary placement, he said.

Additionally, cash donations for these items and for future permanent housing are also needed and much appreciated.

Those wishing to support the Reyes family can direct all donations to: Marian Catholic High School. Attn: Reyes Family, 166 Marian Ave., Tamaqua, PA 18252.
