Palmerton welcomes new officer

The Palmerton Borough Council welcomed its newest police officer at the meeting Thursday night.

Adam Shimer's employment was approved in April, but he had to clear all of the pre-employment tests before being fully instated into the borough police force."You look good in blue," Hoffner said to Shimer."This is my second shift into it, and I'm loving it," Shimer said.Barbosa thanked the police department for being so visible and approachable in public. He said he saw an officer playing a little baseball with some schoolchildren while he was out on patrol. He also saw them walking around the carnival."They were like rock stars," he said. The children were in awe and wanted to go up and talk to the officers.The council had a little bit of its own celebrity status Thursday night. Donovan Beers, 12, of Palmerton, attended the meeting to earn his communication merit badge. Beers is a member of Boy Scout Troop 209 in Palmerton.Councilman Jeremy Ballard said he wanted to offer a special thank-you to Tony's Pizzeria and Papa Al's Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria for sending pizzas to the firefighters who battled the recent fire on Delaware Avenue. The fire broke out in an apartment above the law firm, Anders Riegel & Masington LLC."Just wanted to say thanks to them," he said.
