History of Lehighton event is returning
On the heels of a highly successful event that touted its history, the Lehighton 150 Celebration Committee has planned a sequel.
The History of Lehighton, Part 2, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Pfc. Clyde R. Houser Jr. Building/Borough Annex, according to Autumn Abelovsky, secretary of the committee.Abelovsky, who called the inaugural event a "huge success," said historian Mike Ebbert will lead an oral and photo presentation, beginning from where he left off at the committee's inaugural The History of Lehighton event held in June."Many people leaving the event asked us to plan another similar event, as Mr. Ebbert had much more information to provide," Abelovsky said. "Due to the vast amount of requests, the committee and Mr. Ebbert have decided to hold a History of Lehighton Part 2."As was the first event, the History of Lehighton, Part 2, will be open to the public, with the committee requesting attendees offer a freewill donation. All proceeds will be utilized for the planning of the sesquicentennial."The difference this event will have from the first is that we are encouraging members of the public to bring their own memorabilia to show and display," she said. "If you feel you have a rare item that has local significance and would like to show it to others, or if you own a piece of history and would like to know more about it, please feel free to bring it along."Abelovsky said the committee is asking that collectors limit the number of items they bring to fewer than five pieces, and to have the items labeled with the owner's name and a brief description of the item. Tables will be set up for their use, she said.Attendees will also have opportunities to purchase snacks, win a 50/50 raffle, and enter a Historical Trivia Contest, Abelovsky said."In partnership with The Times News, tidbits of Lehighton history will be printed for the next five days leading up to the event," she said. "Read these, or cut them out and bring them to the event, because they will greatly help your chances of winning."Also, the Lehighton Shade Tree Commission will also be presenting their newest endeavor, a partnership with the Lehighton 150 Celebration Committee; "150 Trees for 150 Years," Abelovsky said. Also, the Lehighton 150 Committee will be presenting information regarding the 150 Club for the 2016 Sesquicentennial, she said.Winners from the prior event's contest were Shirley Radler, handmade pen; Brenda Benner, Lehighton commemorative ornament; and Karen Alboucq, signed copy of the book "Lehighton, Images of America" by Lamont Ebbert and Gordon Ripkey.
