Schuylkill County's Spring Thaw is this weekend

The Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St., Tamaqua, will open its doors this weekend as part of Schuylkill County's Spring Thaw, a three-day event celebrating the art and culture found throughout the county. The cultural event will feature six different venues in the county, showcasing the work of more than 200 artists and vendors.

At the Tamaqua center, visitors will have the opportunity to take tours of the art gallery, art boutique, performing arts hall and studios between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday.During Saturday's morning tours, visitors will have the opportunity to see a youth acrylic workshop, and a sculpting/pottery class in session. In the evening, the Sterling Kock Band will perform a concert of high energy, danceable classic blues/rock, featuring cover songs and original music. Tickets are $10.On Sunday, the center will present the music of the Schuylkill Choral Society Ensemble. The group will perform the "Pop Hits of the 20th Century" at a concert beginning at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.Also on Sunday, an open jam session will begin at 6:30 p.m. Participants are welcome to bring their own instruments, but the center does have microphones, speakers, guitars, drums and keyboards to use. Admission is $3.The "Spring Thaw" is being coordinated by Celebrate Schuylkill and the Schuylkill County Visitors Bureau. Other stops on the tour will include: Schuylkill Haven Walk In Art Center, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday; Mud and Maker, Pottsville, 6:30 to 9 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday; the Arts Barn in Schuylkill Haven, 6:30 to 9 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday; Pottsville Downtown Art festival from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday; Yueng Thing, 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Mountain Valley Golf in Barnesville.Free parking will be available at all locations all weekend long for those who wish to take a self-guided tour.
