A Tamaqua man whose infant died in February will serve 15 days to 12 months in Schuylkill County prison.
Joseph E. Kuhla, 22, was charged with endangering the welfare of children and reckless endangerment after the infant, 6-week-old Bronx, died on Feb. 5 while sleeping in bed with him, his girlfriend and three other children.Kuhla is to begin his sentence at 9 a.m. Friday. The baby's mother, Alyssa Shellhammer, 23, has yet to be sentenced. She faces the same charges.According to court documents, Kuhla and Shellhammer and the other children all shared the same bed.Shellhammer initially told police the infant was sleeping in a portable crib when she discovered that he wasn't breathing. Kuhla initially corroborated that account, but later told police the entire family shared the bed.He said that when one of the children started crying, he went to use the bathroom. Shellhammer then discovered the unresponsive infant and they called 911. Bronx was not breathing when emergency responders arrived, and attempts were made to revive him.The infant was taken by ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital-Miners Campus, Coaldale, where Bronx was declared dead a short time later.Shellhammer admitted having the baby in the overcrowded bed, saying she awoke to find one of the other children with his head on the baby's stomach.According to police, both parents were taught that shared beds are not recommended due to the risk of accidental death.
