DUI case heads to Monroe court

A Monroe County man charged with DUI will have his case heard in Monroe County Court.

Christopher Barnas, 52, of Stroudsburg, was scheduled to have a preliminary hearing March 27 before District Judge Colleen Mancuso of Brodheadsville.Instead, Barnas decided to waive his right to the hearing.Barnas faces charges of two counts of DUI and one count of careless driving.He remains free in lieu of $5,000 unsecured bail.According to an affidavit filed by trooper Christopher Bohenek of the state police in Fern Ridge:On Aug. 13, Bohenek responded to a disabled vehicle occupied by a drunken driver alongside Route 209 in front of a business at 1807 in Chestnuthill Township.Upon arrival, Bohenek spoke to off-duty volunteer firefighter John Mostafa, who said he checked on a gold Honda Civic occupied by a man stopped in an unusual position along the road.Mostafa determined the man was intoxicated, and the vehicle was still running.Mostafa shut the vehicle off and removed the keys from the ignition to prevent Barnas from leaving.Bohenek saw a gold Honda Civic parked on the southbound shoulder of the roadway close to the travel lane, about 2 feet from the white fog line.Bohenek made contact with Barnas, the man in the driver's seat. Barnas was still wearing his seat belt, and Bohenek could detect a strong odor of alcoholic beverages.Bohenek observed a half-empty pint of Nikolai vodka in the center console cupholder. Barnas had glassy eyes and was slow and sluggish while conversing.Bohenek asked Barnas why he was parked there, and Barnas said he could not drive anymore due to his condition.Barnas said he was on his way home from work, and that he did consume alcoholic beverages while driving.Barnas was unsure of his footing and almost fell over multiple times during field sobriety tests. Bohenek placed Barnas into custody for suspicion of DUI.A blood test showed Barnas had a 0.30 BAC.
