The Western Pocono Community Library will hold a book discussion during Banned Books Week at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
This year the library is holding an Adult/Teen Book Discussion on "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. Since this book has now been made into a movie, it seems a good time to read, discuss and decide why there is talk about the banning of it.This book is one of the 100 most challenged books in the past 20 years. The most frequently cited reasons for challenging "The Giver" have been violence and being unsuited to the age group; in other words it's too dark for children. The library is celebrating the freedom to read what we want, when we want and how we want.In Celebrating Banned Books Week, the library is letting the world know that it is OK for a parent to say, "I don't want my child reading this book" but it is not OK for anyone to say, "No one should read this book."If you have any questions or need help getting a copy of the book, please let the library know. For more information, call Patti Weiss at 570-992-7934.
