Walnutport has been asked to place pedestrian signs at a dangerous crosswalk that has been the site of several deaths in recent years.
Leslie Dixon asked borough council on Thursday to consider the placement of pedestrian signs between the McDonald’s and Dollar General on Main Street.
Dixon noted there have been multiple crashes at that area over the years, including two fatalities.
Dixon said she hopes council can purchase signs and place them at that area to prevent the loss of any other life.
However, borough roadmaster Michael Wentz told Dixon that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is responsible.
“Anything that gets done on Main Street is PennDOT,” Wentz said. “The borough has no jurisdiction.”
Borough engineer Jason Newhard said he’s not even sure that’s a legal crosswalk.
It was noted that PennDOT controls anything on Route 145 and Main Street.
Resident Donald Eckhart said something needs to be done.
“There’s more coming there too; that’s a mess,” Eckhart said. “That is an absolute dangerous mess.”
Council directed borough solicitor Michael Corriere to write a letter to PennDOT to see if a safety study is warranted.
After the meeting, Dixon said that her mother, Dorothy Peters was killed there in 2012.
