Slatington to purchase historic lights

Slatington council last week decided to approve the purchase of two historic lights for Slatington Memorial Park. The total cost of the two lights is $6,990. The borough will contribute $2,144. Other funds for the project are from the CDBG program in the amount of $3,846, and $1,000 from private donations.

As far as COVID-19 preparedness, the council agreed to authorize the borough manager to purchase items as per budget in the COVID-19 County Relief Block Grant, which was a total of $70,769.66.

Borough Manager Dan Stevens said the money has to be used by the end of the year. He has placed orders for N95 masks, cleaning supplies, quarantine wages, etc. He also asked the county if some of the money could be applied to a security system for the water and sewer treatment facilities, and they agreed to it.

The council approved renewing the lease between the borough and state Rep. Zach Mako to continue renting office space in the municipal building from Dec. 1 through to Nov. 30, 2022. Rent was increased from $675 a month to $700 month.

“It’s nice to have his office in the building,” council member Dave Schnaars said.

The lease for the law office Steckel and Stopp LLC was renewed and will run from 2021 to 2025. The office is also in the municipal building.

Stevens said there is an office available to rent in the building. He would like to get it filled. Anyone interested in the office space can contact him for more information.

The council thanked Abel Boyer, a representative from A.F. Boyer Hardware in Slatington, for a donation to the police commission. The hardware store held a fundraiser in late August to benefit the police and raised $780.

The council appointed Dawn Tworkosky to fill a vacancy on the Parks and Recreation Commission for the remainder of the term for the seat. The term goes to 2022.
