Schuylkill Co. coroner releases details on woman killed by train

Results are in for the death of the woman hit by the train in Ryan Township.

Schuylkill County Coroner David J. Moylan III said Melissa Merenda, 39, had “extensive underlying blunt force trauma.”

A virtual autopsy was done Thursday at the Simon Kramer Cancer Institute which, although was “helpful” produced more questions.

“It revealed some other factors that we may need to address with an open autopsy,” Moylan said, a decision he will make this weekend.

If Moylan opts for an autopsy, it will be done at The Dauphin County Forensic Center, Harrisburg.

He would not elaborate what the other “factors” are. Toxicology tests were sent to a laboratory.

Merenda was killed Thursday after she was hit by a train at 710 Tuscarora Mountain Drive in the area of the overpass by the Dollar General, according to an employee of the Schuylkill County Communications Center.

Moylan said Merenda was walking on the tracks when hit. Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner Al Barnes pronounced her dead.

The Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad has jurisdiction for the incident, although state police at Frackville responded.
