Tamaqua wrestlers can, in fact, take part in a wrestling tournament next month despite the concerns of several school directors.

That's after the school board, on a 4-2 vote on Tuesday, approved the participation of the Tamaqua wrestling team at the 2016 Tony Iasiello Memorial Junior High Classic Tournament at Parkland High School in Allentown on Feb. 13 and Feb. 14.Directors Daniel Schoener, Wanda Zuber, Bryan Miller and Melanie Dillman voted in favor, with Director Eileen Meiser and board President Larry Wittig opposed. Directors Thomas Rottet, Mark Rother, and Aaron Frantz were absent.After the meeting, Meiser said she was against the measure because the tournament falls on a Sunday, a day when families often attend church."It should be a family day," Meiser said. "I'm a firm believer that one day a week needs to be family day."At last week's workshop session, Wittig questioned why the tournament had to be held on a Sunday, adding that he believes the matter is a "bad precedent to discourage church attendance."
