Second-grader Andreya Tate should have been happy about the last day of school. But instead, as she left Our Lady of the Angels Academy in Lansford on Wednesday, she was crying.

The last Catholic elementary school in the Panther Valley, OLOAA closed its doors Wednesday. And the moment made students like Tate emotional because of the friends and teachers that made the school special."I know this sounds weird, but I love all of them," said Tate, crying as her grandmother picked her up at school on Wednesday."I didn't expect her to cry. She made me cry a little bit," her grandmother Venus Enoch said.Our Lady of the Angels is set to close permanently this month as part of the Diocese of Allentown's plan to reorganize Catholic churches in the Panther Valley.Parents said that they'll miss the personalized instruction that students got by having a close relationship with their peers and teachers."They're all close knit, they know each other. All the teachers know the kids no matter what grade they're in. It's sad," Jennifer Hess of Lansford said.Next year, students have to choose whether they want to attend St. Joseph Regional Academy in Jim Thorpe, St. Jerome Regional Academy in Tamaqua or their local public school.Hess said she believes that many of the teachers at the school have found other placements in the area.She said that she hopes to get as good an educational experience at her child's next school."The programs they have, the curriculum is outstanding. I just hope it continues to be that way at St. Jerome's," she said.The school, which was founded as St. Michael's, was renamed after being consolidated with other elementary schools in the area in 2008.It will officially close June 30. That is when the St. Katharine Drexel Parish, which is attached to the school, will close its doors as well."I never thought this one would have closed down. This was the biggest church in town, now this one's shutting down," Hess said.But some parents are bound and determined to keep the school and parish open. They hope to block the closure of the building and keep Our Lady of the Angels open as a school.Tate said that she would like to find a way to keep the school open."Everybody was so nice, and I really want to just stay with them at that school," she said.
