Bike night, car show set for Saturday
Though it will be only the second time the Slatington Bike Night & Car Show will take place, Saturday's event holds quite a surprise for attendees.
A brand-new 883 Iron Harley-Davidson will be raffled off at the close of this year's event, which runs from noon to 8 p.m. At press time, tickets were still available for $10 apiece. The event will close down Main Street in Slatington from Second Street to South Street, beginning at 10 a.m.The co-chairmen of the event are Slatington Volunteer Fire Department Chief Keith Weaver and Brian Taylor, president of the Teamster Horsemen Motorcycle Association of the Lehigh Valley, 53 North, which is hosting the event. The bike event was created to honor Milt "Bup" Greene, a decades-long member of the fire department who especially loved the historic Fireman's Statue on Main Street in the borough and the fire department itself, both of which Weaver said were near and dear to his heart. Greene was also a member of the Teamster Horsemen Motorcycle Association. In addition to the motorcycle theme of the event, a car show will be held, with two trophies awarded; one a "Fan Favorite" and the other a "Family Favorite," chosen by Milt's daughters, Kristin Greene, of Allentown, and Julie Haydt, of Northampton.Car registration will be from 10 a.m. to noon at Second and Main streets and cost $10 per car.A DJ will spin tunes during the car show, which will run from noon to 4 p.m.Five live bands, 5 Ton Jack, CA/CD, Governing Murphy, Handel and Nuff Sedd, will play throughout the day, starting at 12:30 p.m., at a stage by the First Niagara Bank.Weaver said there will be 30 vendors in all and plenty of activities for both adults and children alike, including a mechanical bull ride, a Keystone Harley-Davidson booth, a bounce house, face painting and more."It's definitely bigger than what it was last year, as far as vendors and sponsorships," Weaver said.He said that the Homeslate Sports Bar & Grill and The Shack will be serving beer, which may be consumed only within the barricaded area of the event. The Shack will hold a pig roast.Weaver said, "There'll be plenty of things there, plenty of food, bands, music ... stuff for the kids to do. So you don't need to have a bike or a car to come to the event. Come and enjoy it."
