Police to suspect: 'We are coming for you'

A Monroe County man suspected of shooting two state troopers, killing one and injuring another Friday night, belonged to a military simulation unit based in eastern Pennsylvania, according to state police.

As part of the re-enactment group, Eric Matthew Frein, 31, of Canadensis, portrayed an Eastern European soldier during the Cold War."In his current frame of mind, it appears Frein has assumed that role in real life," Lt. Col. George Bevins said during a news conference.Frein, a reported self-taught survivalist, has shaved his head tightly on both sides with long hair on top, yet wider than a Mohawk, police said."We believe he made this hairstyle change in preparation to commit this cowardly act," Bevins said. From a secluded area outside the Blooming Grove state police barracks in Pike County late Friday night, Frein reportedly fatally shot Cpl. Bryon Dickson and wounded trooper Alex Douglass with a .308 rifle that included a scope."He could have been anywhere from 300 to 1,000 yards away," Bevins said.In addition to his time portraying an Eastern European soldier, Frein had actually traveled to Europe within the past few years.Police did not specify which country he visited, or the nature of his trip.Frein remained on the loose today as law enforcement received multiple reported sightings including several in Carbon County. All sightings turned out to be false."We have well over 150 law enforcement officers involved in the search, which we have expanded even out of the state at this point," Bevins said. "Authorities are maximizing the resources available, and that would include search dogs."Police, however, believe Frein is still within close proximity of Pike County after a Jeep registered to his father was found submerged in a swampy area around 2 miles from the barracks Monday night.Inside the Jeep, police found a Social Security card, a Game Commission range permit, camouflage face paint, a flashlight, a black hooded sweatshirt, two empty rifle cases, military gear and information about Frein's address, 308 Seneca Lane, where he lives with his parents. He is still considered armed and dangerous. As has been the case in prior press conferences, police spoke directly to Frein on Wednesday."If you are listening while cowering in some cold, damp hiding place, we are coming for you," Bevins said. "It is only a matter of time before we bring you to justice for committing this cowardly act."Frein's family members and known acquaintances have been questioned, but Pike County District Attorney Ray Tonkin issued a stern warning Wednesday to anyone aiding the suspect during the manhunt."Anyone helping Frein will be vigorously prosecuted," he said. Two school districts, Pocono Mountain and Wallenpaupack, were closed on Wednesday."That decision is up to the individual districts," Bevins said. "While you can never rule out an act of violence, we still firmly believe he has a grudge against law enforcement dating back to 2006 and Pennsylvania state police remain his main target."Bevins said the investigation has turned up no prior connection between Frein and the victims.A public viewing for Dickson was held Wednesday and the funeral was today.Security will be "tight," Bevins added.Meanwhile, Douglass is recovering but will need "a lot of future surgery."Police will continue to act on tips, which can be made by calling 866-326-7256.
