4 tons of electronics collected
Nesquehoning is helping keep four tons of electronics out of landfills.
On Wednesday, during the monthly meeting of borough council, President David Hawk, reported that the borough collected 8,120 pounds of electronics during its most recent electronic recycling collection last month."That's four tons that won't be in a landfill," Hawk said.The borough periodically hosts electronic recycling events to help residents get rid of items such as computers, printers, some appliances and televisions.Council members are now looking to set a date in October for the fallcollection.In other matters, Nesquehoning is looking for a volunteer to serve on the board of representatives for the Dimmick Memorial Library. Anyone interested in serving should submit a letter of interest to the borough by no later than July 15. The next meeting of the board for Dimmick Memorial Library is July 22.In other business, council discussed or acted on the following items:• Mayor Sam Kitchko reported that for the month of May, police collected $2,533.45; issued 65 citations; had 482 incidents reported and drove 2,707 miles on patrol.• Adopted a mutual aid agreement with Mahanoy City for emergency services.• Hired Derek Marouchoc as a part-time police officer pending his remaining tests.• Hired Keith Gogal as a part-time sewer summer laborer. He will be paid $10 per hour and work 32 hours a week.• Amended the part-time police pay scale from five levels to three. The pay scale will now be $12 per hour without a Municipal Police officers' Education & Training Commission qualification; $17 once the officer gets the MPoETC qualification and $19 per hour after working one year for the borough.• Approved spending $595 plus $50 range fee for NRS instructor school for officer Carl Breiner.• The next NesquehoningNeighborhood Watch meeting will be at 7 p.m., June 30, at the borough hall.
