Towamensing names new fire chief

Towamensing Township supervisors appointed Jeremy Haydt as the new fire chief Thursday night.

Haydt was appointed in place of longtime chief Wayne Knirnschild.Haydt previously served as first assistant chief. The township requires the fire company to submit two names for the fire chief position. The company also submitted Knirnschild's name. The fire company has come under fire in the last few months, after the supervisors ordered an audit of the finances. The audit determined that bingo, pull tab and food revenue were not properly documented. There was no record of the number of pull tabs purchased, the amount collected and paid out, according to the audit. There was no record of membership, which means there is no master list of active members. This should be maintained to reconcile dues collected to the total number of members.Bank statements must be reconciled at the end of the month so records agree with calendar year statements. Separate accounts should be kept for bingo, pull tabs and food revenues.Minutes are kept by the secretary and saved on an annual basis at her house. The auditor recommended a permanent minute book be maintained in the safe at the fire hall.In light of the audit, the company has discontinued bingo and formed a committee to study if it is profitable. The fire company is also establishing a bank account to keep monies organized and purchasing a computer to keep electronic records.
