Genealogy workshop

The Tamaqua Public Library will host a workshop session of Genealogy and Family History on Sept. 17. Participants will discover ways to use online resources to help trace their family line. Cutting-edge technology, such as the FamilySearch website of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints, make tracing a family history paperless, portable and convenient. The website allows users to search, discover, preserve and share individual family histories.The workshop will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the library on Railroad Street.The library will also conduct a blowout book sale of like-new and gently used books, from Labor Day through Sept. 19. All items have been donated and will be sold, for 10 cents, as is. All sales will be final as space is needed for upcoming programs and events.Salvation Army newsThe Tamaqua Salvation Army hosts a number of weekly programs in addition to its 11 a.m. Sunday worship services.Sunday school, for all ages, is held from 12:15 to 1 p.m. on Sundays.Activities include: Mondays, the Needlebugs meet at 9:30 a.m., youth meet at 3:30 p.m. and teens meet at 5 p.m.; Tuesdays, Men's and Women's fellowship are held at 5 p.m.; Wednesday, Older and Bolder group meets at 10 a.m. and Timbrels, Bible study and prayer meeting are from 5 to 8 p.m.; Thursday, youth group meets at 4:15 p.m.Computer and AARP drivers' safety classes are being planned for the fall, with more information to be announced at a later date.Bucket booksThe Bucket List Book Club will meet at 7 p.m., Sept. 2, at the Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St.This meeting's selection will be "Falling Man," written by Don Delillo. The story begins on Sept. 11, 2001 amid the smoke, rubble and ashes of the World Trade Center. It is centered on a survivor, Keith, and his family, and delves into the many ways their lives were changed forever on that fateful day.New members are always welcome. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session and secretary Ruthann Feane offered the invocation "No Matter Where or When."The group discussed a number of upcoming activities, including several possible trips in September and October.July and August birthdays will be celebrated at the next meeting, which will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Tamaqua YMCA, 1201 E. Broad St.The group is open to anyone 55 or older and the Y is handicap accessible.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church.
