Weissport withdraws support

Weissport Borough Council voted Monday to rescind a prior motion to support the letter from the Carbon County Board of Commissioners regarding the proposed fire training facility.

Councilman Arland Moyer said, "I was not informed of all of the details when we discussed this prior, I have recently been informed they are building a new communications center up there too. After the money spent recently to upgrade the current center, I am not in favor of supporting this new building."Vice President Susan Pywar added, "They do not even use the entire facility they have up there now."Pywar made a motion to rescind the prior action and not send a letter of support to the Board of Commissioners. Moyer made the second to the motion.Council passed the motion with a vote of 4-0.Present at the meeting were President Gene Kershner, Vice President Susan Pywar, Councilman Arland Moyer and Councilwoman Brenda Leiby. In February, the Carbon County Commissioners announced plans for the construction of a fire training facility, as well as the construction of a new Emergency Management Agency building on approximately 12 acres of land on the Broad Mountain. The site is located next to and in front of the current EMA/911 Communications Center. The conceptual plans call for constructing an approximately 3.8-acre fire training facility with a training building and drill areas and a two-story multiuse building that would be the new home of the EMA and Emergency Operations Center, as well as classrooms, meeting areas, vehicle and apparatus parking garages; and a storm water management facility that would recycle water that is collected as available water for live fire training. The current EMA/911 Communications Center is used heavily throughout the day and many evenings by numerous organizations for meeting and training purposes, officials said previously. Once the new facility is built for the EMA, the Communications Center would take over the current building for its operations.Commissioners also projected that with the help of Delta Development, the company hired to help secure funding through various sources, the project should be funded mainly through state and federal money and should not have a significant local impact on the taxpayers. In other business, a longtime Weissport council member resigned.Council accepted the resignation of Pywar, who has served on council for over 11 years, citing "work and life commitments."Russell Schoenberger has resigned from the Weissport Sewer Authority. Council appointed resident Greg May to fill the vacated by Schoenberger. The vacant council seat will be advertised for residents interested in applying.Council instructed Secretary Jillyan Sterling to advertise for a firm to handle the lawn care and landscape needs along the levy and canal in the borough.Council also approved a $100 donation to the Lehighton Area Memorial Library.
