Tribute to Jack Sturm

In past articles, we've written about partnerships, mentoring, business support, paying it forward and being part of the solution.

At the Carbon Chamber and Economic Development Corporation, we have the wonderful opportunity to work with volunteer leaders throughout the county. Some of these volunteers go above and beyond the call of duty and become amazing ambassadors supporting the needs of our local businesses. This week, I'd like to honor an amazing ambassador who recently passed away, John "Jack" Sturm.Jack was a stellar volunteer leader and served his community for over 30 years. He was the kind of person you could call and ask how to work out a difficult situation or challenge; in fact Jack was on "speed dial" and was a great mentor to me.He cared about everyone and every situation that came his way, supported the Carbon County Chamber of Commerce and Carbon tourism advocating for local businesses … all while doing consulting work for businesses like Blue Mountain Resort and many others in the area.I'd like to share a few things I've learned from Jack and pass them along in a small effort to honor his legacy and the work he's done to strengthen Carbon County.• Treat everyone you meet with respect, even if you have a difference in opinion• Be part of the solution in every challenging situation• Find ways to partner and work together … for the greater good• Take risks and lean on mentors to help you pave the way• Engage others by showing passion and enthusiasm for your work• Be honest, fair and treat everyone equally• Give it your all in every situation for the "greater good" and don't back down• Have fun, laugh a lot and enjoy doing what you doI can go on.However, the lessons learned above are the ones that surfaced right away when thinking about the work Jack has done to support me … and so many others.Take the time to read each one, and take it a step further. Find situations where you can use all of the lessons in the work that you do and in life. You'll feel pretty good about yourself while helping others, giving it your all at work and supporting your community. Let's all work together to keep Jack's legacy alive in the work we do to support Carbon County. Please mark your calendar for this year's CCEDC ninth Annual Golf Tournament taking place on Friday, Sept. 18 at the Blue Shamrock Golf Club.Jack was part of every tournament, so we will be honoring him during the event.Knowing Jack, he would want you to be there … networking, having fun while supporting CCEDC and a local business! See you there …Thank you, Jack …Your Forever Friend,Marlyn
